72 Xiangyu: A Toast to Historical Majesty

Embodying Dignity and Power: The Conqueror Liquor's Design

In a fusion of history and modernity, the 72 Xiangyu liquor bottle stands as a testament to cultural heritage and design innovation, capturing the essence of Chinese Baijiu with an artistic twist.

The design team, comprising Lubo Cao, Xiaoqiang Hu, and Pengfei Dai, has meticulously crafted a liquor bottle that is more than a container; it is a symbol of power and wisdom. Drawing inspiration from the legendary figure Xiang Yu, known as the Overlord of Western Chu, the bottle's tripod shape is a nod to the dignity and strength associated with historical Chinese artifacts. The crown of the bottle, shaped like the ox head of Emperor Yan Shennong, infuses the design with layers of cultural significance, making it a remarkable piece in both form and function.

What sets the 72 Xiangyu apart is its striking visual identity. The design team has chosen a palette of black with gold, bronze, and red accents, creating a visual contrast that is both classic and noble. The use of embossing techniques and a combination of glossy and matte finishes enhances the tactile experience, inviting the beholder to explore the historical narrative encapsulated in the bottle's form.

The realization of this design is a testament to the craftsmanship involved in its creation. The bottle's intricate details are the result of a multi-process production technique, ensuring that each element of the design contributes to the overall aesthetic and tactile experience. The liquor itself, made from raw pulp and aged for 20 years, offers a rare flavor profile that complements the bottle's historical and cultural allure, adding to its collectible value.

With dimensions of 20.7x15.4x30.8cm and a capacity of 500ml, the 72 Xiangyu is not only a premium wine but also a significant cultural artifact. It holds a special place at high-level business banquets and serves as a prestigious gift, embodying respect and appreciation. The design's interaction with its users goes beyond mere consumption; it is an artwork that engages the senses and evokes the rich tapestry of history.

Completed in October 2021, the project's research delved into the importance of premium wine in Chinese culture, where it signifies respect and celebration. The design challenge was to balance tradition with innovation, creating a product that stands out in the market while honoring its cultural roots. The result is a liquor package that is instantly recognizable, steeped in tradition, and designed to be cherished as a collectible.

The 72 Xiangyu's design excellence has been recognized with a Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2024, a testament to its creative ingenuity and cultural resonance. This accolade underscores the design's success in blending art, science, and technology to create a product that not only enhances the quality of life but also enriches the world with its cultural significance.
