In the heart of Taipei, a city known for its vibrant energy and dense urban landscape, lies a residence that stands as a testament to the power of design in creating tranquility. Ink Realm, a project by Iris Liu and Eden Hsu, is a boutique apartment that redefines the concept of a retirement home. With a focus on blending the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape with the comforts of modern living, this residence offers a unique living experience that is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally superior.
The design inspiration for Ink Realm was drawn from the site's central location, flanked by lush greenery and distant mountains. The designers employed a minimalist approach to ensure that the interior and exterior spaces interweave seamlessly, creating an environment reminiscent of a Chinese ink painting. This artistic vision is complemented by the use of natural, low-saturation colors and rational imagery, crafting a sanctuary of calm for the residents.
What sets Ink Realm apart is its integration of a smart home system that quietly 'energizes' the living space. The comprehensive system, accessible from across the country, includes air circulation, underfloor heating, and light-sensitive electric curtains, among other features. This technological marvel ensures that the social area circulation is in harmony with both the inhabitants and the displayed artworks, enhancing the functionality and extending the service life of the space.
The realization of this design was achieved through the use of environmentally friendly materials such as natural charcoal and diatomaceous earth, which naturally regulate indoor temperature and humidity. The independent air-conditioning and drainage systems minimize disease vector spread, while intelligent curtains balance natural light with heat insulation. The semi-translucent book wall and hidden storage spaces further exemplify the thoughtful consideration given to every detail of the design.
Ink Realm's design interaction is a reflection of the residents' habits. Latticework walls discreetly separate private areas, while integrated furnishings cater to reading, piano playing, and audio-visual enjoyment. Art collections are strategically placed to lead the eye through the space, with large hidden cabinets cleverly combining storage with kitchen functionality. This meticulous attention to the client's needs ensures a living space that is not only beautiful but also supremely comfortable and convenient.
The project, completed in Taiwan, faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic head-on. By utilizing pre-site simulation exercises and factory prefabrication, the designers were able to reduce project time by over 30%, minimizing on-site staff and adhering to strict dust pollution control and disaster prevention measures. The result is a space where the display of artwork, warm wood tones, and the integration of the natural environment invite residents and guests to a state of peaceful contemplation. The Iron A' Design Award in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024 is a testament to the project's success in achieving a harmonious blend of design, innovation, and lifestyle.
