Revolutionizing Intimacy: The Hustler Redesign

Joy Lin's Innovative Approach to Adult Products

In a bold move to reinvent the adult product industry, designer Joy Lin presents a redesign of the Hustler product line. The new design, celebrating the erotic duality of masculinity and femininity, aims to shift the brand's focus towards couples, thereby expanding its market and re-establishing itself as a leader in the sex industry.

The Hustler redesign is inspired by the coming together of two individuals, a concept that is beautifully reflected in the design's unique properties. Each product is featured in a two-fold nature, playing with relation, contrast, movement, and penetration. The idea of two becoming one is not just a symbolic representation of the intimate act, but also a strategic move to appeal to a broader market.

Lin's design stands out for its innovative use of materials and technology. The packaging is made of polylactic acid (PLA), a corn-based plastic that is not only renewable but also does not emit toxic fumes when incinerated or leech chemicals into the soil. The printing is done with water-based inks, further reducing the environmental impact of the products.

The design's interaction is as intriguing as its concept. For instance, the "Yours & Mine" product contains two types of lubricant gels, one smooth and one rough, enclosed in separate halves of the package. Users simply push the forms together to dispense the lubricants. The product line also includes "Slip & Slide" condoms, "Tease & Toy" vibrators, and undergarments for both men and women.

Lin's design process involved extensive research into the sex industry, including interviews with professionals and surveys of everyday couples. The goal was to understand their views, habits, opinions, and preferences, and to address common concerns about the safety and privacy of adult products. The result is a product line that is not only sexy but also hygienic and subtle, appealing to couples who are open to trying something new but feel intimidated by the explicit nature of most adult products.

The Hustler redesign has been recognized for its innovation and impact, winning the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2012. This prestigious award is granted to creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advance art, science, design, and technology, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
