Automat Toolkit Packaging

Unboxing Innovation for IoT Prototyping

The Automat Toolkit Packaging, designed by Boris Design Studio, revolutionizes the way developers prototype IoT concepts. Inspired by a Japanese secret box, this packaging unfolds like a staircase, elegantly displaying each component. With its unique design and functionality, the Automat Toolkit Packaging makes prototyping quick, easy, and visually appealing.

The Automat Toolkit is a sensor kit that empowers developers to bring their IoT ideas to life. The packaging itself serves as a tool for prototyping, providing a tangible way to explore the system. By incorporating a pre-programmed get-started exercise, users can play with the kit, understand its potential, and calibrate the sensors simultaneously. This innovative approach lowers the threshold for getting started and allows users to validate their ideas more efficiently.

The construction of the Automat Toolkit Packaging posed creative and technical challenges. The complexity of the design required skilled craftsmanship, making automation impossible for the low order quantity of 2000 pieces. However, through extensive research and collaboration between Boris Design Studio, the client, and a supplier, a solution was found. The packaging is made from eco-friendly materials, including recycled cardboard and PET plastic, ensuring durability and sustainability.

Measuring 50mm (w) x 50mm (d) x 50mm (d), the Automat Toolkit Packaging is compact and portable, making it ideal for developers on the go. Its sleek black exterior and debossed details exude sophistication and professionalism. The interior features EVA foam drawer inserts, carefully designed to present all components at the surface, facilitating easy access and organization.

With the Automat Toolkit Packaging, the user experience is enhanced through a series of interactive steps. Upon removing the protective hood, a hidden message encourages exploration. Connecting the kit to the Automat app allows users to choose from pre-programmed sequences and control Spotify, seamlessly integrating physical and digital experiences. While exploring the system, users also calibrate the sensors, transforming a typically mundane task into an engaging exercise.

The Automat Toolkit Packaging is not only a means to get started; it is a reusable shell for prototyping. Its design supports the development of wearable IoT ideas, particularly targeting developers in the fashion industry. By combining functionality, aesthetics, and user-friendly features, the Automat Toolkit Packaging empowers developers to create, present, and validate their ideas with confidence.

The Automat Toolkit Packaging, designed by Boris Design Studio, has been recognized for its excellence in packaging design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019, a prestigious accolade that celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award highlights the Automat Toolkit Packaging's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
