Vibrolith RBST: A Revolutionary Electro-Pneumatic Lithotripter

Designers Serhat Apak & Burhan Özugur Create a Simple, Robust, and Aesthetically Pleasing Medical Device

The Vibrolith RBST operates on the principle of a bullet colliding with a steel probe, accelerated by compressed air. This simple yet effective mechanism sets it apart from other devices in the field. The design, made of stainless steel and injection plastic, is not only robust but also easy to clean, thanks to its soft forms. The tray, compatible with the main unit, features ergonomic and aesthetic qualities, including hangers for probes and easy mobility via wheels.

The device's user-friendly nature is another standout feature. The operator can easily select the pulse mode as single or continuous, by simply pressing the touch-key panel. A digital counter allows for monitoring of the total number of pulses applied. Operation pressure can be adjusted easily and independently of the pressure supply, by turning the knob of the regulator on the control box.

The Vibrolith RBST was designed and produced in Ankara, Turkey, between November 2011 and February 2012. It is currently produced by ELMED Inc. in their own factory and was exhibited at MEDICA2012. The design team, consisting of Burhan Özogur, Serhat Apak, and Hakan Tezcan, prioritized sterility and ease of use in their design process, aiming to avoid user errors during surgeries that require extensive attention.
