X-Acto: Precision Cutting Tool Packaging

The All-in-One Solution for Designers and Artists

The X-Acto redesign merges DIY and utilitarianism, offering a creative and hands-on experience while maintaining precision and functionality.

The new X-Acto packaging, designed by Joy Lin, revolutionizes the way designers and artists transport, store, use, and dispose of their precision cutting tools. Inspired by the idea of merging DIY and utilitarianism, Lin created a packaging that not only meets the user's every need but also showcases the brand's commitment to creativity and precision.

The unique feature of the X-Acto packaging lies in its compartmentalized design, ensuring that all precision tools are safely and conveniently accessible. The packaging is compact and stackable, utilizing B-fluted corrugated material and soy-based flexographic inks. It is designed to resemble a package that could have been cut out with an X-Acto blade, adding a touch of authenticity to the overall design.

During the research phase, Lin conducted surveys to understand the pain points of X-Acto users. Common complaints included the hassle of carrying multiple items separately, such as knives, spare blades, and rulers, as well as the risk of injuries caused by unreliable knife caps and used blades in the trash. Lin aimed to solve these issues with the all-in-one X-Acto packaging.

The X-Acto packaging features compartments for the knife and new blades, as well as a slot for old blades to prevent them from falling out after disposal. It also includes a slot for a 6" metal ruler, an essential tool for every X-Acto user. The packaging is not only functional but also environmentally friendly, promoting the reuse of the packaging and proper disposal of used blades.

The X-Acto packaging has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2013, a prestigious accolade that honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. The award recognizes the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

With its cutting-edge design that satisfies both form and function, the new X-Acto packaging is the all-in-one solution for every designer and artist. It combines the convenience of a compact and compartmentalized design with the authenticity and precision that X-Acto is known for. Say goodbye to the hassle of carrying multiple items and the risk of injuries, and say hello to a new era of precision cutting with X-Acto.
