This sash lock, designed by BUTZ + KLUG Architecture, is part of a larger assembly of custom-designed double and triple hung windows. As the contemporary double hung window increases in energy efficiency, its proportions become thinner, yet deeper, and its operation smoother and more precise. The Minimal Sash Lock takes advantage of these advances and is based on simplicity in operation, installation, and manufacture.
The design of the traditional sash lock tends to be in conflict with the directionality experienced while looking out through the window. The Minimal Sash Lock addresses this issue with its simple, low profile, and elongated proportions, achieving a much more subtle recognition of its function. Its unique properties include minimal installation, requiring only a single screw at each component.
3D printed in a stainless steel alloy, the Minimal Sash Lock utilizes the minimum thickness and material allowed by the technology. It has a width of 19 mm, a depth of 85 mm, and a height of 15 mm, with the depth of the swing arm variable based on the depth of the window.
The design process for the Minimal Sash Lock began in November 2011 and was completed in September 2012. The design team, consisting of Pamela Butz, Jeffrey Klug, and Joshua Fiedler, faced several challenges in distilling the design down to its most basic components and functionality. They had to address the need for simplified geometries that respond directly to the function of the object while relaxing at points of contact with the hand.
The location of the lock's mounting and operation had to relieve stress on the meeting rails, which tend to fail over time. The design also had to use the minimum material dimensions printable with 3D printing technology to produce the least possible material needed for the functioning of the hardware. This allowed for customization of the swing arm's length to fit any depth required by a specific window.
The Minimal Sash Lock has received recognition for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2013, which is given to creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
