Monomer's design process begins with the creation of geometric, voluminous shapes, which are then covered with a patterned skin. This simple yet fascinating idea allows for an almost inexhaustible range of designs, perfectly consonant with the opportunities offered by rapid prototyping. Customers can choose their preferred shape, pattern, and material, resulting in a truly unique piece of jewelry.
The production process is equally innovative. After the design is finalized, customers can choose from a wide range of materials, from polyamide printed with an EOS Formiga – the best SLS machine on the market today – to various metals, including stainless-steel, bronze, sterling silver, 18 kt gold, and titanium. The finished pieces are then treated with special techniques to make them resistant to all kinds of fluids, such as coffee or red wine.
Monomer's commitment to innovation extends to the finish of their products. In addition to the standard high gloss or sandblasted finish, they offer a unique soft-touch finish. Developed in partnership with a service provider, this finish gives the jewelry a unique feel that customers find irresistible.
Despite the challenges associated with rapid-prototyping technologies, Monomer has managed to create a product that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also economically viable. By pushing the limits of these technologies, they have been able to produce complex, parametric geometries that traditional jewelry manufacturing techniques cannot replicate.
The Odyssey project by Monomer/Thomas Mrokon is a testament to the power of design and technology. It has been recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in 2013, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations. This award is a testament to the designer's creativity and wisdom, and to the extraordinary excellence of the Odyssey project.
