The Cube: Revolutionizing Transport Packaging

A Disruptive Technology by Luis Felipe Rego

The Cube is an innovative open architecture crating system that is revolutionizing the packaging industry. Designed by Luis Felipe Rego and his team at Smart Packaging Systems, this patented technology is changing the way products are packaged, transported, and displayed.

The inspiration for The Cube came from a desire to challenge the status quo in the packaging industry. Rego was inspired by Guy Kawasaki's philosophy of thinking differently and not accepting things at face value. For the past 50 years, the packaging industry has been dominated by big corrugated paper companies. The Cube aims to disrupt this monopoly and introduce a more efficient and cost-effective solution.

What sets The Cube apart is its unique properties and strengths. It is the only market solution designed to go from product loading at the end of a manufacturer's production line, onto a delivery truck, and straight to the retailer sales floor or distributors of various industries. This eliminates layers of costs and reduces over-packaging. The Cube was also the first packaging design to meet environmental and ISTA testing directives from Walmart.

The Cube is made of a special engineered 100% paperboard lamination with a combination of recycled and virgin fibers. It is environmentally friendly, being compostable, biodegradable, and recyclable. The design incorporates a super strong glue with a special humidity resistance formulation, as well as crossed fibers between layers, making it more durable and resistant than traditional corner angle protectors.

With its flexible and versatile design, The Cube can be adjusted to comply with customers' specific needs. Its standard dimensions are 1016mm x 1219mm, with an adjustable height ranging from 1016mm to 2160mm. It has high load compression resistance, with a static load capacity of 1,600 Kgs and a dynamic load capacity of 600 Kgs. It can also be used in humid-freeze supply chain environments.

The Cube offers numerous benefits for retailers. It allows manufacturers to control the display and point of sale message, while retailers can cut labor costs as there is no need for unpacking and display construction. The Cube improves visibility, product accessibility, and turnover per square foot of selling space. It also presents the product attractively and with supporting sales messages, leading to increased sales.

The development of The Cube was not without its challenges. The team had to ensure that the design was sustainable, reusable, compostable, recyclable, and cost-effective. They also faced the challenge of competing against a well-established and monopolized industry. However, with over 24 worldwide patents and rigorous testing procedures, The Cube has proven to be a game-changer in the packaging industry.

The Cube has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2013, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This prestigious award recognizes The Cube's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

The Cube is not just a packaging solution; it is a disruptive technology that is transforming the way products are packaged, transported, and displayed. With its unique properties, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, The Cube is paving the way for a more efficient and environmentally friendly future in the packaging industry.
