Heartland Table: Sustainable Furniture Designed by Fred Sparks

A Multipurpose Heirloom Quality Piece with a Modern Aesthetic

The Heartland Table is a unique and sustainable furniture design by Fred Sparks. This multipurpose heirloom quality piece combines a modern aesthetic with sustainable manufacturing processes, making it a standout addition to any space.

The Heartland Table stands out not only for its design and functionality but also for its commitment to sustainability. Manufactured in the Midwest, USA, the table is made using urban reclaimed lumber instead of standard lumber sourcing. This urban reclaimed lumber is sourced from trees in urban settings that are diseased, fallen, or considered a nuisance. By repurposing this wood, the Heartland Table helps reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact of furniture production.

What sets the Heartland Table apart is its focus on sustainability throughout the entire manufacturing process. Sparks and his team used their proprietary sustainable design strategies, along with Sustainable Minds software, to identify the most sustainable production options for the table. The research revealed that using 25 pounds of reclaimed urban lumber resulted in a 99 percent smaller carbon footprint compared to the same amount of standard-practice sourced lumber. Additionally, the Heartland Table with wooden legs has a 97 percent smaller carbon footprint at manufacture when compared to the standard wood sourcing process.

To further reduce the carbon footprint, the Heartland Table features an "X" design for its foundation instead of the standard box frame. This design not only benefits the environment and consumer but also the manufacturer. The "X" frame requires less wood compared to a standard table frame, resulting in cost savings for the manufacturer without compromising on quality or aesthetics.

The Heartland Table's design is not only sustainable but also visually appealing. The "X" frame creates a lighter visual underneath the table, giving it a modern and approachable appearance. The clean lines and pop of color make it versatile and suitable for various spaces. Each table has a unique aesthetic due to its urban wood top, adding an individual touch to every piece.

With its flush legs and rail, reclaimed hardwood top, and recycled steel or reclaimed hardwood base, the Heartland Table is a well-crafted piece of furniture. It is available in different sizes to accommodate different seating capacities, making it suitable for both intimate gatherings and larger events.

The Heartland Table is not just a beautiful piece of furniture; it is a testament to the possibilities of sustainable design. By utilizing reclaimed materials and innovative manufacturing processes, Fred Sparks has created a table that combines style, functionality, and environmental consciousness. It is a true icon of modern sustainable design.

Since its introduction in 2012, the Heartland Table has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2013, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical expertise, and innovation. The Heartland Table's strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, and commitment to sustainability make it a deserving recipient of this accolade.
