Rough Chic: A Blend of Contemporary Trends and Rustic Charm

Miralis' Award-Winning Design Marries Modernity and Barn Wood Aesthetics

With the rise in popularity of barn wood and naturally aged wood, Miralis has ingeniously created a kitchen cabinet door material that perfectly marries contemporary trends with rustic charm. This design, aptly named 'Rough Chic', has been recognized for its innovation and aesthetic appeal, winning the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Accessories, Hardware and Materials Design Award in 2014.

The unique properties of the Rough Chic design lie in its ability to enhance the features and characteristics of wood altered by the seasons. The product is textured like barn wood, with the authenticity of each natural characteristic cleverly revealed, including knots, cracks, spalted wood, grub holes, termite holes, and natural splinters. Available in two models - slab and shaker - and six different colours, including natural, this design allows designers to perfectly align the rough and the chic.

The Rough Chic design is custom-made according to customers' requests and is made with 100% knotty ash. The texture is created by brushing the surface of the wood, followed by the application of various dyeing processes for a special finish. The technology behind this design involves a machine invented by Miralis, designed with steel brushes to achieve the desired texture.

The project, which started in October 2012 in Rimouski and finished in August 2013, was a collaborative effort. The team included Project Manager Jean-François Savard, Expert-Colorist Marie-Pier Fillion, Marketing Specialist Annie Boudreau, Machine Concept Langis Bélanger, and Machine Operator Fred Côté. The team met every morning to monitor the project's progress.

The Rough Chic design was inspired by the flooring industry for its texture and shade trends. Different providers of steel brushes advised the team in developing their machine. The creation of the Rough Chic has led the trend of barn wood to an increased level. However, the supply of brown ash posed a significant challenge during the project.

The Rough Chic design is a testament to Miralis' commitment to innovation and design excellence. It is a perfect example of how a blend of contemporary trends and rustic charm can create a product that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and unique. With its award-winning design, Miralis continues to set trends and push boundaries in the world of design.
