Exosuit Storage Shelves: A Revolution in Wall Storage

Ultra-thin Aluminum Clapboard Transforms Living Spaces

The Exosuit Storage Shelves, designed by Dongjie Cao, are a departure from conventional wall storage systems. Rather than using wood, the design employs ultra-thin aluminum, aligning with contemporary aesthetic standards. The shelves can be used in various living spaces and come in different colors, offering a versatile storage solution.

One of the unique features of this design is its adaptability. The shelves can be customized to suit the decor of different rooms. For instance, extra leather can be added to the shelves for a classic Italian style in the living room or bedroom. In contrast, a minimalist German functionalism style can be achieved in the kitchen or bathroom by choosing a narrow side with a hollow groove design for kitchenware storage.

The technical specifications of the design include a length of 2400mm, a width of 300mm, and a height of 55mm. The main structure of the clapboard uses a thin front and a trapezoidal hollow design at the bottom, reducing the weight of the aluminum while improving its bearing capacity. The design also incorporates an ultra-thin LED energy-saving lamp belt, providing user-friendly controllable light.

The Exosuit Storage Shelves project started in September 2020 and was completed in December 2020. It was exhibited at Design Guangzhou 2020. The design process involved extensive research, with the designer seeking out various materials from Chinese suppliers before settling on ultra-thin aluminum. The design also uses an environmentally friendly fuel injection process, eliminating any peculiar smell.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was ensuring the ultra-thin and simple design while minimizing the weight of the aluminum clapboard and maximizing its load-bearing capacity. After numerous design iterations and tests, the final design was realized, staying true to the original design intention.
