When it comes to scientific instruments, design and functionality are paramount. The EVOQ Triple Quad Mass Spec, a project spearheaded by Daniel Dion and the Benchmark for Bruker team, is a testament to this principle. This mass spectrometer, which has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award, is not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, setting a new standard in the field.
The design of the EVOQ was inspired by the qualities of speed, seamless workflow, and robustness, which are of utmost importance to end users. The formal design language borrows imagery from both jet engines and surfing as metaphors for these qualities. The result is a product that allows users to focus on solving analytical problems without being distracted by the instrument's operation.
What sets the EVOQ apart from other mass spectrometers is its unique design properties. The compact size, subtle curves contrasted with crisp edge details, and contrasting colors draw the user's attention to Bruker's signature iconic round inlet cover, which is the system's functional interface. The EVOQ is also designed for maximum and controlled airflow, addressing the challenge of compacting the design to benchtop unit size without impeding the target system performance characteristics.
The EVOQ is more than just a pretty face. It was designed for a singular purpose - to reliably quantify thousands of real samples in the fastest sample-to-report time possible. It delivers exceptional sensitivity, precision, accuracy, linearity, and a wide dynamic range for multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) assays. Innovations in software and atmospheric pressure ionization (API) technology make it a game-changer for routine high-sensitivity, quantitative analysis.
The design process of the EVOQ was a collaborative effort, with the Bruker Corporation Design Team working under the direction of Dr. Rohan Thakur. Industrial Design and Usability research was conducted by Benchmark Electronics at the Bruker site in Fremont, California, as well as formal user interviews at the Stanford University Mass Spectrometry Lab. The project, which started as an initiative to develop a more compact high sensitivity Mass Spectrometer, took 18 months to complete.
In conclusion, the EVOQ Triple Quad Mass Spec is a shining example of how design and innovation can revolutionize scientific research. Its award-winning design, coupled with its exceptional functionality, makes it a game-changer in the field of mass spectrometry.
