Massaya: A Reusable Wine Package That Tells a Story

Functional and Sustainable Packaging Inspired by Vintage Books

Every wine bottle is a story. So we chose to make a functional and reusable package that looks like a vintage book. Books tell stories, and there’s a common feeling of heritage when you approach fine books and fine wine.

Massaya, designed by BRANDiT., is a unique and innovative packaging solution for wine bottles. Unlike traditional wine packages that are used for vertical display and then discarded, Massaya breaks the trend by offering a reusable package that is true to the object it holds. Inspired by vintage books, this horizontal package not only stores wine bottles in the best position but also doubles as a decorative box.

The design of Massaya is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. The package measures 39x22x8cm and features a special die-cut inner part that securely holds two wine bottles. To ensure a perfect seal, the closing system is designed with two side flaps and two small flaps. This eliminates the need for stickers and adds to the overall elegance of the package.

One of the key strengths of Massaya is its reusability. After enjoying the wine, users can either replace the bottles and continue using the package or remove the inner mold and repurpose it as a decorative box on a display shelf. This environmentally friendly feature adds to the appeal of Massaya, making it a collector's item for wine enthusiasts.

During the design process, the team at BRANDiT. conducted extensive research to find a unique idea for wine packaging that met the criteria of reusability. Once the concept of a book-inspired design was approved, production experiments were carried out to achieve a cost-effective and functional package. The use of corrugated paper proved to be the best choice for withstanding the weight of the bottles, resulting in a successful product that sold out during the Christmas season.

Massaya not only offers a practical and sustainable solution for wine packaging but also adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the overall wine experience. Its vintage book design pays homage to the stories that wine bottles hold, creating a sense of heritage and tradition. This innovative packaging design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative characteristics that meet professional and industrial requirements.
