The design of Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island was inspired by the rich culture and traditions of Asia. The initial massing concepts for the hotel were analyzed using a solar/lighting program, which resulted in the installation of burnished bronze solar fins on the façade. This design element not only serves a practical purpose but also artistically resembles a dragon wrapping the building, deeply rooting the structure in Asian culture. The hotel's rooftop features a dramatic glass-bottomed cantilevered pool that shimmers at night, symbolizing the gleaming pearl often associated with Chinese dragons.
What sets this design apart is its strong connection to local culture. The designers aimed to reflect the vibrant nature of Asia, Hong Kong, and Wanchai in the architectural expression. The shading device on the hotel façade, which resembles a dragon, and the glass-bottomed cantilevered pool, considered as a pearl, are unique features that provide legibility at both the city (macro) and human (micro) scale.
The realization of this design involved the use of advanced technology. The unique external shading device of the hotel provides selective and intelligent screening where it's needed most. A solar/lighting program was deployed to analyze the sunshade and the shading effect of the neighboring buildings. This analysis resulted in a distinct pattern of sun and shade on the elevations. For the cantilevered swimming pool, a continuous piece of acrylic panel was used to avoid sudden failure of the glass panel and to allow an unobstructed view.
The project, spanning from 2009 to 2013, was a challenge that required a deep understanding of local culture and context. The design team, led by architect Max Connop from Aedas, successfully overcame these challenges to create a design that is both fulfilling and contextualized in its local culture. The hotel, with a gross area of 8,500 sqm, is now a landmark in Hong Kong's Wanchai district.
Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island has been recognized for its exceptional design and contribution to societal wellbeing. It was awarded the Platinum in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2014.
