Steam: A Modern Take on Traditional Tea Brewing

Hakan Gürsu's Award-Winning Design Revolutionizes Tea Preparation

Hakan Gürsu's Steam is not merely a tea maker; it is a testament to the rich tea culture of the East. The design features stacked teapots, each with a unique role in the tea preparation process. The larger lower kettle is filled with water to boil. As the water boils, it evaporates into the upper kettle, slowly steeping the loose-leaf tea blend. This methodical process ensures a full-flavored brew, capturing the essence of each tea leaf.

Once the desired amount of tea is collected in the upper kettle, a switch on top is turned to stop the water transfer. This allows the user to control the strength of the drink, serving it using two kettles with poured tea and water to dilute. The glass teapot, which shows the tea color, is complemented with glass cups, adding an elegant touch to the tea serving set.

Steam is not only functional but also environmentally conscious. The tea maker is made from aluminum and glass materials along with recycled plastics. Including a stainless steel base, all parts are fully recyclable, reflecting Gürsu's commitment to sustainable design. The design harmonizes elements from traditional craft teapots and naturalist art, creating a modern, sculptural tea serving set.

Assistant Designer Eren Şenyurt played a significant role in bringing Steam to life. The design's unique properties and innovative approach to tea brewing earned it the Platinum A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
