Kishoku: A Modern Interpretation of Japanese Cuisine

Connecting Tradition and Contemporary

Kishoku, a Japanese restaurant designed by J. Candice Interior Architects, offers a modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine inspired by the vibrant Japanese Lantern Festival. With its unique design elements and attention to detail, Kishoku stands out as a fine dining destination in the heart of Hong Kong.

Located in the dynamic and multicultural city of Hong Kong, Kishoku captures the essence of Japanese culture while embracing the city's diverse atmosphere. The main inspiration for the design comes from the Japanese Lantern Festival, with elements such as festival drums and lanterns reimagined into modern design features.

The interior of Kishoku is characterized by light natural tones, creating a serene and inviting ambiance that complements the vivid colors and natural freshness of the sushi and sashimi served. The restaurant is divided into three distinct areas: the booth area, sushi bar, and VIP room.

In the booth area, each booth seating is paired with a handcrafted harvest table made from the finest raw wood. Between each booth set, rows of brown tassels with gilded copper crimps suspend from the ceiling, acting as partitions and adding a touch of elegance to the space.

Above the sushi bar, a visually striking centerpiece awaits. Forty square lanterns, arranged in a large checker pattern, create a focal point that captivates the attention of diners. The ceiling above the sushi bar is mounted with mirror plates, creating an illusion of "trompe l'oeil" with the centerpiece, adding depth and visual interest to the space.

Behind the sushi bar, two VIP rooms offer a more intimate dining experience. One room is designed for a chef's table, allowing guests to witness the culinary artistry up close. The other room is dedicated to private banquets, providing a luxurious and exclusive setting. Each VIP room showcases a different backdrop of gold motifs hand-painted by Japanese abstract painters, adding a touch of sophistication and artistry to the space.

The realization of Kishoku's design involved the use of various materials, including stone, ceramic tiles, wood veneer, marble, and stainless steel. The combination of these materials adds texture and visual interest to the space, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Completed in June 2013, Kishoku has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2014 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

With its seamless blend of tradition and contemporary design, Kishoku offers a unique and memorable dining experience for those seeking a taste of Japanese cuisine in the heart of Hong Kong.
