Motley: The Color Reference App Revolutionizing Design

Motley stands out from other design tools due to its quick, interactive, and user-friendly features. It enables users to generate color values in various formats such as RGB, HEX, and CMYK for quick referencing. More than just a color tool, Motley also serves as a platform for sharing ideas and inspiring others, thereby fostering a global design community.

The application was realized through Responsive Web Design (RWD), a web design approach aimed at crafting sites and applications for an optimal viewing experience across a wide range of devices. By using HTML5, CSS3, and Media Queries, the designers ensured that Motley adapts its layout to the viewing environment, whether it be a mobile phone or a desktop computer monitor.

Motley is designed to adapt to various screen sizes, dimensions, and resolutions. It is compatible with iOS systems like iPhone5s/5c, iPad Mini/ iPad Air, Blackberry Phones & Playbook, Android, and Windows. The design submitted for the iPhone 5s/5c has a screen size of 640px x 1136px and a resolution of 326 ppi.

The creation of Motley was driven by extensive research into the role of colors in our lives and how we interact with them. The designers conducted interviews and prepared detailed questionnaires for a diverse group of users, including students, design learners, professionals, artists, and the design fraternity. The findings revealed a need for a handy guide-like structure for color referencing and understanding how colors interact with each other and their application.

Despite the challenges faced during the project, the designers successfully developed a unique solution to the problem identified in their research. Motley not only provides a quick color reference but also allows users to capture color palettes from their environment, making it a truly innovative tool in the realm of design.

In recognition of its exceptional design and innovative features, Motley was awarded the Platinum A' Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design Award in 2014. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
