The TLC system was born out of the need to streamline patient monitoring and record-keeping in healthcare facilities. Traditional methods, involving manual checks and paper-based documentation, often disrupt patients' rest and consume valuable staff hours. With TLC, Chandekar has created a patient monitoring system that not only improves efficiency but also enhances the overall patient experience.
The heart of the TLC system is the smart bed, which features an OLED screen and a TLC application. Made with smart fabric, the bed records vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and moisture levels. This data is wirelessly transmitted to a tablet at the nurse station, enabling continuous monitoring without disturbing the patient.
One of the standout features of the TLC system is the OLED transparent screen on the patient's side. This screen provides a clear and non-intrusive display, allowing patients to control their mattress temperature and bed position with ease. The intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) ensures that patients can make adjustments without the need to call a nurse.
At the nurse station, the TLC interface presents a comprehensive overview of each patient's vital signs and alerts for any parameter changes. This interface also serves as a digital record of drugs and fluids administered, which can be accessed by doctors for review and adjustment of dosages. By digitizing and centralizing patient data, the TLC system eliminates the need for manual paperwork and enables quick and informed decision-making.
The development of the TLC system presented several challenges. Chandekar and the design team had to create interfaces that were simple and intuitive, considering the diverse backgrounds and cultural habits of patients. The result is a user-friendly OLED screen with just two buttons for easy control, and a clean and straightforward nurse station interface for efficient monitoring.
The Touch Free Life Care system, developed over a span of three weeks at the MIT Institute of Design, has garnered recognition for its ingenuity and impact. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment category. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
The TLC system, with its seamless integration of technology and design, is poised to revolutionize patient monitoring in healthcare facilities. By saving staff hours, enhancing patient comfort, and providing real-time data, it represents a significant step forward in the pursuit of efficient and patient-centric healthcare.
