EpiShell: Redefining Epinephrine Injectors

A User-Centered Solution for Allergic Reactions

EpiShell is a revolutionary epinephrine injector designed by Hong Ying Guo that aims to alleviate the fear and inconvenience associated with carrying and using these life-saving devices. With integrated wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice guidance, EpiShell offers a unique and intuitive experience for patients and carriers.

EpiShell was inspired by the ubiquitous presence of smartphones in our lives. Recognizing that most people carry a smartphone at all times, Guo sought to leverage this familiarity and create a solution that not only reminds patients to carry their epinephrine injector daily but also helps alleviate their fear of using it.

One of the standout features of EpiShell is its integrated wireless mobile charger. By combining the epinephrine injector with a portable power charger, EpiShell ensures that patients always have a fully charged smartphone, which is crucial for making emergency calls after an injection.

In addition to the wireless charger, EpiShell also features Bluetooth connectivity and voice guidance. The accompanying smartphone app allows users to easily manage functions such as instructions for use, Bluetooth connection, emergency contacts, and refill/expiry date reminders. With just three simple steps, EpiShell provides an intuitive and user-friendly experience.

The design of EpiShell prioritizes user-centered solutions. Extensive research revealed that many patients do not regularly carry their epinephrine auto-injectors, and after three months, they often forget how to use them. Furthermore, parents expressed concerns about others being able to properly administer the injector in an emergency. EpiShell addresses these concerns by providing easy access to the injector, a singular holding motion, legible safety release, and a cohesive movement for releasing the safety cap and performing the injection.

EpiShell's dimensions are compact, measuring 4.5" in length, 2" in width, and 0.8" in thickness. The device is manufactured using injection molding with ABS and acrylic materials, ensuring durability and reliability.

Recognizing its innovative design and practicality, EpiShell was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design category in 2014. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

EpiShell is not just a medical device; it is a friendly life helper that integrates seamlessly into patients' and carriers' daily lives. By reducing fear, increasing motivation to carry the injector, and providing intuitive functionality, EpiShell sets a new standard for epinephrine injectors.
