Smart Board: A Sustainable and Educational Design

Creating a Stimulating Environment for Children

Observing children playing with hand-made recycled materials, Ljiljana Reljic & Snezana Cvetkovic were inspired to create the Smart Board. This innovative design utilizes a wide variety of recycled packaging materials, contributing to environmental protection.

The Smart Board, also known as the eco board, is a unique project that showcases the creative potential of recycling. By collecting and repurposing packaging materials, the designers have created a stimulating environment for children to learn and play.

The project involves collecting various types of packaging and creating individual recycling packaging materials. The designers then monitor children's play activities and incorporate the separated materials into three parts of the eco board. This process demonstrates how packaging can be reused in a creative and educational way.

The Smart Board is handmade using different kinds of recycled packaging. The base of the board is made of cardboard coated with a protective transparent foil. The motifs on the boards are made of a variety of materials, including leather, wood, fabric, iron, plastic caps, zippers, pebbles, wool, sandpaper, plastic buttons, and laces.

Measuring 53cm x 41.5cm x 3cm, the Smart Board offers a compact and versatile design. The packaging dimensions are 55cm x 45cm x 13cm, providing ample space for storage and transportation.

The eco board serves as a didactic tool that helps children acquire knowledge, skills, and familiarity with ecological terminology in a fun and easy way. The different materials and textures used in the motifs stimulate sensory development, making learning a multisensory experience.

The Smart Board has been well-received in various settings and events. It was presented at the 17th Expert Meeting of Nurses of Serbia in Kladovo, the 3rd International Expert Conference in Cetinje, Montenegro, the 6th Festival of Science in Novi Sad, and the XX Autumn Expert Meetings Educator Tara.

Research conducted on the Smart Board involved gathering opinions from parents and educational staff. Anonymous questionnaires revealed positive results, highlighting the importance of using the board in practice. The quality of children's activities with recycled materials was also monitored, further validating the effectiveness of the design.

The creation of the Smart Board was not without its challenges. The designers faced the task of selecting the most attractive parts and fitting them into meaningful themes that would engage children of all ages. The result is a design that captures and retains the attention of children, offering a range of experiences and opportunities for learning.

The Smart Board is not only an educational tool but also a symbol of environmental consciousness. By using recycled materials, it raises awareness of pollution and the importance of a healthy environment among children and their creators.

The Smart Board's innovative design and commitment to sustainability have been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
