Private Collection: A Unique Brooch by Petra Boehler

A Synthesis of Precious and Worthless Materials

Private Collection is a one-of-a-kind brooch that showcases the creative genius of renowned designer Petra Boehler. Inspired by childhood memories and a love for collecting treasures, this brooch combines precious and worthless materials to create a truly unique piece of wearable art.

Boehler's inspiration for the Private Collection brooch stems from her childhood habit of collecting various objects in a case cabinet. This brooch serves as a revival of that sentiment, incorporating beautiful gemstones, natural objects, and even seemingly worthless materials that caught her interest. Each handmade piece in the collection is a one-of-a-kind object, featuring unusual forms, vibrant colors, and wearable designs that tell a hidden story.

What sets the Private Collection brooch apart is the deliberate juxtaposition of valuable and worthless materials. Boehler believes that this contrast not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the brooch but also creates a new synthesis. The revalidation of these seemingly worthless materials serves as a fundamental source of inspiration for Boehler, resulting in a collection that challenges traditional notions of value and beauty.

The Private Collection brooch is meticulously crafted using traditional goldsmith techniques. Some material fixings are achieved through micro-welding, ensuring the durability and longevity of the piece. The dimensions of the brooch are 4 mm in height, 52 mm in width, and 64 mm in length. It features sterling silver, 18ct gold, a boulder opal freeshape measuring 4 mm in height, 22 mm in width, and 32 mm in length, aquamarine faceted drops, a snake shell, and a rusty iron find.

Private Collection is not only a wearable piece of art but also a fascinating addition to any jewelry collection. Its design speaks to the passage of time, with elements that symbolize the destruction and creation that occur throughout geological ages. The boulder opal represents the landscapes formed over time, while the aquamarine tears and snake shell allude to the ancient history of life on Earth. These elements are framed by the precious materials of 18ct gold and sterling silver, further emphasizing their significance.

Creating the Private Collection brooch presented its own set of challenges for Boehler. She had to find a design that allowed the different materials to coexist harmoniously, without detracting from the meditative vibrancy of the piece. The result is a brooch that seamlessly blends contrasting materials, creating a captivating and thought-provoking work of art.

Designed in 2013 and completed in January 2014 after months of development, the Private Collection brooch is a testament to Petra Boehler's artistic vision and dedication to craftsmanship. Its unique design and innovative use of materials earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2015. This award recognizes exceptional designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, while also contributing to a better world through their practicality and innovation.

With the Private Collection brooch, Petra Boehler invites us to reconsider our perceptions of value and beauty. By combining precious and worthless materials, she challenges us to find meaning in unexpected places and appreciate the synthesis that can arise from such contrasts. This brooch is not just a piece of jewelry; it is a work of art that tells a story and sparks contemplation.
