Herno: Urban Lighting Inspired by Tradition

Herno draws its inspiration from the traditional "Herno" architectural element, which was used to provide lighting in traditional homes. The loops on top of the product are reminiscent of these Hernos, embedded with LEDs to illuminate the surroundings. Additionally, the iconic Azadi tower in Tehran served as a source of inspiration for the overall form of the design.

What sets Herno apart is its focus on the context in which it is placed. The design takes into consideration the local and traditional concepts, resulting in a familiar form that resonates with the social target audience. The external loop surface features LEDs that provide direct illumination, while the internal loop surface creates an elegant and soft light with a variety of color spectrums.

When users sit on a bench near the urban light or stop by, the internal light loop starts to turn on. Over time, the color of the light changes from a primary cold color to a warm color, creating a more inviting atmosphere. Simultaneously, the intensity of the external light loop declines, allowing the intended light to have a greater impact on the surroundings. This interaction with the design enhances the overall experience for people in the vicinity.

Herno is made using aluminum, a common material for urban lighting. The design incorporates two types of LEDs: powerful LEDs on the internal loop surface with lenses for better light focus, and RGB ribbon LEDs on the internal light loop surface for a uniform and diffused light effect. The electronic equipment, including drivers and a human detection sensor, is housed in a case below the leg of the design, with cables connecting to the LEDs.

With dimensions of 520mm in width, 500mm in depth, and 3000mm in height, Herno stands tall as a visually striking and functional urban lighting solution.

The project to create Herno began in May 2014 and was completed in December 2014, both in Tehran. Extensive research was conducted in three phases, exploring the historical background, city identity elements, and people's interaction with urban lighting. The design overcame the challenge of balancing visual coordination with the city environment while fulfilling its primary function of illuminating the city.

Herno has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Herno's technical characteristics and ability to evoke positive emotions make it a truly remarkable design.
