Black Eyes: A Poetic Approach to Lighting

Designing a Lighting Concept Inspired by the Human Eye

Lighting plays a crucial role in our perception of objects and spaces. Inspired by the way our eyes control the light entering them, designers Saeid Aliari and Pouran Daryaei have created a unique lighting concept called Black Eyes. This concept takes an abstract impression of the eyes and transforms it into a functional and aesthetically pleasing lighting fixture.

The Black Eyes lighting concept features a spherical form with two shells. The outer shell is fixed, while the inner shell can rotate around the vertical axis. By rotating the inner shell, the direction and focusing of the light can be adjusted, allowing for different modes and lighting effects. This interactive feature provides users with an enjoyable physical interaction, as they can choose the perfect position and angle of the light according to their needs.

What sets Black Eyes apart is its metaphoric approach to the form of lighting. The design evokes a poetic look, reminiscent of the changing light during the day and night. The rotation of the inner shell simulates the movement of the Earth and the moon, creating a small world within a room. The placement of two symmetrical holes, not directly in front of each other, adds intrigue and uniqueness to the concept.

Aside from its aesthetic appeal, Black Eyes also offers efficient functionality. The rotating inner shell allows users to precisely describe and shape the space with light. The concept's simplicity and clever design make it both interesting and meaningful, as the form directly interacts with its function.

When it comes to production, two methods are available for creating Black Eyes. The first method is spinning, which is suitable for limited production. The second method is molding and pressing technology, which is more suitable for high-volume production. Regardless of the method chosen, the production process involves creating the two spherical parts in two stages. The smaller inner shell is made first, followed by the larger outer shell.

The specifications of Black Eyes include a radius of 170mm for the inner shell and 175mm for the outer shell. The holes on both parts have a radius of 85mm, and the angle between the two holes is approximately 90 degrees. These dimensions ensure that the lighting concept functions optimally and provides the desired lighting effects.

Black Eyes has garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. Black Eyes stands out for its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in the quality of life.

The Black Eyes lighting concept, created by Saeid Aliari and Pouran Daryaei, offers a unique and poetic approach to lighting design. Its metaphoric form and interactive functionality make it a captivating addition to any space. Whether used in residential or commercial settings, Black Eyes adds a touch of elegance and sophistication while providing customizable lighting options.
