There are many beautiful things in the world that often go unnoticed. One such example is the industrial building in Hong Kong, which has become a new hub for young creative individuals. Tik Chan, a local designer, saw the potential in this overlooked space and decided to transform it into a stunning office interior. The concept behind this project, named MISS-ed BEAUTY, aims to highlight the beauty that we often miss in our surroundings.
The key feature of this design lies in the innovative use of surplus timber strips. These strips, made from lower quality or leftover timber, possess a variety of colors and textures. By utilizing these strips to create partition wall finishes, Tik Chan was able to achieve a visually striking and sustainable design element. To complement the natural feel of the timber, concrete-like wall paint was chosen for other areas of the office. Additionally, a plant wall was incorporated into the conference room, further enhancing the connection to nature within the industrial setting.
Aside from the creative use of materials, sustainability was also a priority in the realization of this design. LED spotlights were installed throughout the office to save energy, and all existing flooring was retained, despite its less-than-ideal appearance. Furthermore, old furniture from the previous office was repurposed, reducing waste and contributing to the overall sustainability of the project.
The MISS-ed BEAUTY office spans approximately 100 square meters and was completed in 2014. The design team, led by Tik Chan, overcame the challenge of finding the right recycled materials that matched the design concept. The result is a visually stunning and environmentally conscious office space that showcases the beauty that can be found in overlooked and discarded materials.
This innovative design has garnered recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The MISS-ed BEAUTY office is a testament to the power of creativity and sustainability in creating a better world.
