2 Oaks House: A Fusion of Architecture, Nature, and Technology

A Contemporary House with High Energy Efficiency and Integration of Existing Trees

From the architects:

The 2 Oaks House, designed by OBIA Ltd. Architecture Studio, is a stunning example of the fusion of architecture, nature, and technology. Located in a low-rise residential area near Sofia, in the outskirts of Mountain Vitosha, this single-family house stands out for its unique design and high energy efficiency.

The main challenge of the design was the preservation of the two existing old oaks and their integration into the spaces of the house. These trees not only create a natural micro-climate but also function as living elements in the composition. The architects wanted to emphasize the space around the trees, resulting in a design concept inspired by a folded white paper.

The house features a U-shaped living zone on the ground level, consisting of a kitchen, dining room, and living room. This space is fully glazed and open towards the yard, allowing for a seamless connection with the outdoors. The glazed tiles are sliding elements, transforming the living area into a covered terrace during the summer months. On the upper level, two bedrooms, a master bedroom, and a small office are situated. This level is also thoroughly glazed and open towards the trees, providing a unique experience of walking through the crowns on a covered wooden deck.

Preserving the two existing trees plays a significant role in the thermal balance of the building, given the extensive glazing. The oaks serve as natural protection against overheating in summer and contribute to the geothermal cooling heat-pump system. This system charges the ground with excessive heat during the summer and pumps it back during the winter season. Additionally, the low winter sun penetrates deep into the living spaces when the leaves have fallen off, charging the thermal mass in the floor slabs.

The 2 Oaks House is highly energy efficient, with features such as low-temperature floor heating/cooling, triple gas-filled glazing, and thick glass-wool thermal insulation. It also boasts a controlled ventilation system with a high level of heat recovery. The house is fully controlled by a building automation system, allowing the user to manage all parameters of the building systems remotely and track energy usage statistics over time.

This exceptional design by OBIA Ltd. Architecture Studio was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2015. The award recognizes the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated by the design, as well as its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill. The 2 Oaks House truly exemplifies excellence in contemporary architecture, showcasing a harmonious integration of nature, technology, and design.
