Orion: A Luminary Design Inspired by the Stars

Orion's unique properties lie in its top-mounted LED luminaire design, which offers a practical and fascinating structure while reflecting the brand identity of its creators. The design provides an aesthetic product and a wide variety of technical solutions to lighting problems. An RGB LED line around the luminaire top offers adjustable ambient light with different color choices, adding to its uniqueness.

The design realization of Orion involves two main materials: an aluminium alloy main body and a PMMA optical cover. LED modules for illumination are housed under the optical cover, and a constant current LED driver inside the luminaire serves as a power supply. To ensure a longer lifetime for the LED chips, the LED PCBs are mounted on a metal sheet to reduce heat. The main body is created using aluminium injection die casting and powder coating for various surface finishes. The PMMA cover is produced by plastic injection molding.

Orion's technical specifications include a size of 650 mm x 580 mm x 460 mm and a lifespan of 50,000 hours for the LED modules. The design offers various luminosity values such as 1750lm, 2600lm, 4100lm, and power values such as 20W, 30W, 44W. It also provides different color temperature values such as 3000K, 4000K, and 6500K.

The design interaction of Orion is simple yet modern. Its aluminium alloy construction is mechanically designed to consist of the least amount of parts for the main body, which connect with smart and simple details. The design also includes simple mounting details, allowing users to easily change the top of the luminaire with minimal effort and time. The thoroughness in mechanical and optical details, along with the material selection, makes Orion a high-standard product with an IP66 rating, making it sustainable and eco-friendly.

Orion was designed in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2014. The design process involved a conceptual research about our galaxy and space, focusing on natural light sources. The mechanical team focused on outdoor usage and sustainable production, while the optical team worked on luminous solutions. The design process's most challenging part was the development phase, transforming the concept into a real and manufactured product while balancing creativity and production factors.

Orion was awarded Platinum in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2015. The award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing.
