Crate: A Modern and Functional Bathroom Furniture System

Designing a Bathroom as a Living Space

The Crate bathroom furniture system, designed by Fatih Mintas, offers a modern and functional solution for creating a bathroom that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical. Inspired by a characteristic and simple design language, Crate combines the warmth of wood with a contemporary style, making it a unique addition to any bathroom.

When designing Crate, the aim was to create a bathroom that functions as a living space. The modular system allows for flexibility and customization, making it a popular choice among architects. The project focuses on functionality and modern style, ensuring that users have a comfortable and enjoyable experience in their bathrooms.

One of the unique properties of Crate is its use of natural lamination for the wooden parts. This technique creates different textures within the wood, giving it a more textured and visually appealing look. The vertical thin laths, or handles, are laminated using milling techniques, adding to the overall design aesthetic. Additionally, the lacquered system used in Crate is specifically designed to withstand the water and humidity commonly found in bathrooms.

The Crate bathroom furniture system includes vanity basins in two different sizes, 80cm and 100cm wide. Both sizes have the same molding of the sink compartment, optimizing production and making it more cost-effective. The dimensions of the various modules are carefully designed to ensure easy control and installation. For example, the vanity basins have a width of 80cm and 100cm, while the bowl unit has a width of 120cm, allowing for a total movement of 40cm. The other side modules have a width of 40cm, creating a cohesive and harmonious design when applied to the bathroom.

Designed with the user in mind, Crate offers an ergonomic, aesthetic, durable, and functional solution for everyday bathroom needs. The modular system also provides architects with an easy-to-use and customizable option for their projects.

The Crate bathroom furniture system was developed by a team of talented individuals, including Ece Yalım, Mustafa Oğuz Yalım, Feride Toprak, and Fatih Mintas. The project began in May 2014 in Ankara and was completed in January 2015 in Istanbul. It was exhibited at the Unicera Bathroom Fair in Istanbul in February 2015.

Recognized for its outstanding design and innovation, Crate was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, creativity, and technical characteristics. Crate's unique design language and attention to detail make it a standout choice for those seeking a contemporary lifestyle in their bathrooms.
