Dark Edge: A Versatile Geometric Design Inspired by Beirut

A Unique Piece of Furniture that Transforms into a Table, Stool, or Shelf

Dark Edge is part of The Edge Beirut Revisited Collection, an evolution of The Edge Beirut Collection. The series of furniture and lighting products take a cue from the city of Beirut, a city always on the edge of instability, chaos, creativity, and adaptability. Dark Edge is inspired by the context of the designer's Middle Eastern upbringing and his architectural background. It engages the precepts of Middle Eastern geometric patterns and repetition of forms that can be found in Arabic architecture.

This versatile geometric piece, designed by Tarek Elkassouf, can be fashioned in more than a dozen shapes as a table, stool, or shelf. With its triangular top, the reversible unit is akin to a piece of puzzle that can be flipped, rotated, and stacked to form different objects. The Dark Edge steel base can be used as a table or a stool, but an added glass accessory also allows it to be transformed into a shelf. Made from steel with a quarter-matt black finishing, Dark Edge is hand welded and assembled by artisans in Lebanon.

The Dark Edge unit is 1000mm x 500mm x 350mm in size, with an additional glass accessory. Its geometric form allows it to fit together with other units into various shapes and forms, making it adaptable to different spaces and user preferences. The unit's reversible nature gives it a different form and function, providing flexibility and versatility.

Dark Edge is not only a visually striking piece of furniture but also a testament to the designer's commitment to local craftsmanship. Despite the challenges faced due to the lack of a developed manufacturing sector in Lebanon, Elkassouf believed it was essential for the designs to be made in Lebanon to stay true to their inspiration - Beirut. The production process faced unforeseeable delays due to electricity problems, infrastructure issues, and the constant instability caused by the war in neighboring Syria. However, the designer's perseverance paid off, resulting in a meticulously crafted piece that showcases the skill and talent of Lebanese artisans.

The Dark Edge design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015, which is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award acknowledges the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.

Dark Edge is not just a piece of furniture; it is a symbol of Beirut's resilience and creativity. Its unique design, inspired by Middle Eastern geometric patterns, captures the essence of the city and its ever-evolving nature. Whether used as a table, stool, or shelf, Dark Edge brings a touch of sophistication and adaptability to any space.
