The Tree in Cross collection by Desmond Chan is a testament to the versatility and prolific nature of Salvador Dali, one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Inspired by Dali's surrealism art pieces, the collection features a cubic cross that appears to float in the air, delicately wrapped around a tree. This design represents the concepts of life, immortality, and eternity.
What sets the Tree in Cross collection apart is its innovative use of 3D printing technology. Breaking free from traditional jewelry-making methods, Chan utilizes this cutting-edge technology to create design-driven pieces that are both energetic and limited in production. The goal is to transform inspirations from Modern Art into wearable art jewelry, allowing individuals to express their personal life experiences through unique and tailor-made pieces.
The Tree in Cross collection is meticulously sculpted using Maya, a 3D modeling software, and then 3D printed in sterling silver. The pendant dimensions measure 24.15 x 37.01 x 7.09 mm, while the bracelet dimensions are 74.14 x 58.55 x 24.14 mm. The bracelet itself is slightly flexible, allowing for easy adjustment to different wrist sizes.
Throughout the design process, Chan faced several challenges. The 3D model was rejected multiple times by the printing service company. However, through perseverance and amendments to the design, including thickening the branches, the pendant was successfully 3D printed in sterling silver.
Desmond Chan, a self-taught jewelry designer based in Hong Kong, finds inspiration in everything from Modern Art to everyday street scenes. He strives to strike a balance between technology and art in his designs. With the advent of 3D printing, Chan has embraced this technique as it allows for the creation of intricate details and eliminates many traditional process steps. Each design in the Tree in Cross collection is sculpted using Maya and 3D printed in silver and gold.
The Tree in Cross collection, which began in November 2014 and concluded in February 2015, has garnered recognition and acclaim. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exemplify outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Tree in Cross collection stands out for its technical characteristics and ability to evoke positive emotions, amazement, and wonder.
Desmond Chan's Tree in Cross Jewelry is a testament to the fusion of surrealism and wearable art. With its unique design, innovative use of 3D printing technology, and recognition in the design community, this collection is a true masterpiece.
