Teca: A Symphony of Wood and Light

Shiina+Nardi Design's Award-Winning Lamp Combines Craftsmanship and Innovation

Shiina+Nardi Design's Teca, a unique wooden ceiling light, showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and innovative design. This piece, which won the coveted Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2015, is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday objects into works of art.

The Teca lamp is a product of meticulous research and fine craftsmanship. The design team's inspiration came from the unique properties of wood and its interaction with light. Each piece of wood has its own story, reacts differently to the lathe and time, and requires a thorough understanding to bring out its best characteristics. This understanding is reflected in the Teca lamp, where the wood's natural beauty is enhanced by the light passing through it.

What sets Teca apart from other lamps is its unique combination of materials. The lamp is made of hand-turned wood encased in a bubble of blown transparent glass, with metal accents. This combination of raw wood and polished glass creates a striking contrast, making each lamp a unique and unrepeatable object. The elegance and exclusivity of the lamp are further enhanced by the high quality of its components.

The creation of the Teca lamp was a complex process that involved several artisans and designers. The wooden and glass parts of the lamp are handcrafted by artisans in the Shiina+Nardi Design network. The design team, which includes Lorenzo Franceschinis, spent four years gaining experience in wood turning to find the perfect wood for the lamp. After extensive research, they discovered that cherry tree wood was the ideal choice.

The Teca lamp was first conceptualized in December 2013 and was completed in April 2014. The design process involved overcoming several challenges, particularly in the woodturning process. This delicate process requires not only accuracy during the turning phase but also careful monitoring during the drying phase to prevent deformation and cracking. Despite these challenges, the team was able to create a lamp that beautifully merges the rawness of wood with the elegance of glass.

The Teca lamp is more than just a lighting fixture; it is a testament to the power of design and craftsmanship. It is a product of meticulous research, innovative design, and skilled craftsmanship, resulting in a unique and unrepeatable object that enhances any space. The lamp's success is reflected in its recognition as the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award winner in 2015, a testament to its extraordinary excellence and significant impact on the world of design.
