Eclipse: A Unique Concrete Table Lamp Inspired by Nature's Phenomenon

Ayse Teke Mingu's Sculptural and Functional Design

Eclipse is a table lamp that draws inspiration from a solar eclipse to glow up the interiors and create a specific spatial atmosphere. Designed by Ayse Teke Mingu, this unique lamp combines artistry and functionality, making it a standout piece in any space.

The Eclipse lamp design was inspired by nature's most amazing and unusual phenomenon - an eclipse. Ayse Teke Mingu, the designer, explains that an eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer. This captivating natural event served as the inspiration for the Eclipse lamp, which aims to bring a touch of celestial beauty into our everyday lives.

What sets the Eclipse lamp apart is its sculptural and functional design. The lampshade is crafted from a massive concrete shell, cast in one piece. This unique construction offers a minimalist and simple lamp at its best. Each lamp is distinguished by its individual concrete structure and rough yet inviting aesthetic.

The Eclipse lamp generates a unique lighting effect with bright illumination in the dark. Its spherical shape can be varied in any direction, allowing for versatile placement and lighting angles. The lamp sits elegantly on the concrete shell, adding a touch of elegance to its raw and industrial appeal.

The realization of the Eclipse lamp involves careful casting of raw concrete and meticulous hand assembly. Each lamp is coated with high-quality epoxy on the inside, providing pleasant and warm diffuse light. The combination of epoxy coating, concrete body, and powder-coated aluminum parts ensures durability and longevity.

With its moon gray color and dimensions of 10cm radius and 18cm height, the Eclipse lamp is a compact yet impactful lighting solution. It is equipped with a Philips Cool Daylight LED Bulb, ranging from 10W to 70W, providing efficient and bright lighting. The lamp comes with a 250cm long cable, available in black and made of fabric or transparent PVC.

Ayse Teke Mingu, the designer behind Eclipse, aimed to create a lamp that expresses a self-material feature in opposition to impersonal and cold minimalism. The use of concrete as the main material reflects the moon's surface naturally, adding a touch of celestial beauty to the lamp's design. Concrete was chosen for its simplicity, expressiveness, affordability, modernity, and changeable nature.

The Eclipse lamp project started in May 2014 and was completed in February 2015. Throughout the design process, Ayse Teke Mingu conducted extensive research on the phases of an eclipse and how to translate that shape into a lamp. The challenge was to find the right material that could imitate the moon's surface, leading to the choice of concrete with its grayish color and textured appearance.

Ayse Teke Mingu's innovative design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Eclipse lamp stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Eclipse is not just a lamp; it is a piece of art that brings the beauty of a solar eclipse into our homes. With its unique design, functional features, and captivating lighting effect, the Eclipse lamp is sure to make a statement in any space.
