Reviving Tradition with Sustainable Lighting Design

In a world where the removal of shadows is often synonymous with modernity, Yu Watanabe's lighting design takes an alternative path. Inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki's musings in "In Praise of Shadows," Watanabe's design embraces the interplay of light and darkness. The project utilizes Urushi, a natural lacquer from Japan, to create a series of cylindrical lights that reflect a soft, candle-like glow, inviting contemplation and a meditative state.

What sets Watanabe's design apart is its commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation. The decline of the traditional Urushi craft, challenged by modern materials, is countered by this project's innovative approach. By harnessing Urushi's unique light-reflecting qualities and arranging the lights in tree-like forms, the design simulates the immersive experience of a forest, connecting users to nature in an intimate, tangible way.

The meticulous process of harvesting Urushi sap and applying it to bamboo by hand underscores the project's dedication to craftsmanship. Each piece, varying in size from 60 cm to 167 cm in diameter, is a testament to the skill of Urushi artisans.
