MOON & ORCHID: A Fusion of Tradition and Technology

This project stands out due to its utilization of traditional materials, such as bamboo wood and marble, in combination with precise CNC carving technology and LED lighting. This fusion of tradition and innovation creates a unique and captivating electric stand lighting.

The MOON & ORCHID lighting is composed of three main components: an aluminum reflection and LED lighting representing the moon, bamboo branches symbolizing the orchid, and a ceramic bottom resembling a rock cliff. The aluminum reflection is intricately carved using CNC technology and finished with anodizing. The joint point between the LED lighting and bamboo branch is minimized to protect the heat generated by the LEDs. The bamboo branches can be adjusted according to the user's preference, allowing for a personalized lighting experience.

With dimensions of 540(W) X 20(D) X 445(H) and a base measuring 120,55 Φ X 115(H), this design showcases the beauty of bamboo, aluminum, and ceramic materials. The MOON & ORCHID lighting is not only visually stunning but also functional, providing the same ease of operation as ordinary lighting stands.

The MOON & ORCHID lighting made its debut at the 2014 CRAFT TREND FAIR held at COEX in Seoul. The project lasted from June 2014 to November 2014, during which the design team, led by SANG YOON KIM and LISTEN COMMUNICATION CO, LTD., overcame challenges such as protecting the bamboo wood from the heat generated by the lighting. The result is a truly remarkable piece that captures the essence of Korean tradition and modern technology.

This exceptional design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2015. The award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. MOON & ORCHID contributes to improving the quality of life by seamlessly blending tradition and innovation, making it a deserving recipient of this prestigious accolade.
