The owner of the residence is an elegant and well-educated Chinese lady who has a deep appreciation for both American and Chinese culture. With a passion for collecting interesting Chinese jade pieces, rocks, and artifacts, she desired a living space that would allow her to enjoy the comforts and warmth of the American lifestyle while still embracing the charms of traditional Chinese fashion and culture.
The design of the residence was meticulously executed to meet the owner's requirements for both public and private spaces. The functional and detailed approach ensures that the owner can enjoy a comfortable and natural American style of living while still maintaining the charm, elegance, and traditions of classical Chinese culture.
Strong colors are used throughout the living spaces to vividly interpret the design, creating a rich and vibrant atmosphere. The clever manipulation of lighting, including the use of natural sunlight and interior landscape, adds to the overall ambiance, resulting in a colorful and convivial expression of "home" that changes with the time of day.
The study room features a clean and stylish Chinese tea-house with an outdoor garden lined with ginkgo and bamboo, extending the tranquility of the tearoom. The master bedroom highlights the owner's elegance with tasteful plum blossom and magpie screens, a painting of lotus flowers, silk fabric bedding, and a custom inked carpet. In the private lounge area, a magnolia tapestry screen and titanium shelves create a warm and inviting atmosphere complemented by a fireplace.
In the public living areas, transparent acrylic display shelves are strategically placed between walkways and the dining area. The lighting is cleverly manipulated to highlight the pieces on display, making them stand out even more. Traditional Chinese latticed round windows in the entertainment room create tasteful reflections in a pebble-lined pool of water. The entire entertainment area is a fusion of Western and Chinese furniture, creating an overall oriental theme and mood.
The realization of the design involved renovation, mix and match techniques, and the incorporation of Chinese screens and paintings. The project, which started in Guilin, Guangxi, China, spanned a total area of 550㎡.
Bo Li, the designer behind the project, successfully overcame creative, technical, and research challenges to achieve a suitable combination of Eastern tradition and Western fashion. The careful consideration of color, line, and light resulted in a design that satisfied the client's desires.
