A simulator for forklift operators from Sheremetyevo-Cargo, the Forklift Simulator is a dedicated device designed to train beginner forklift drivers to operate the machine effectively. Inspired by different car and tractor simulators, this unique design offers a realistic training experience in a controlled environment.
The Forklift Simulator consists of an open cabin that rotates on a platform, creating a sense of motion for the trainee. The cabin features a folding panoramic screen, a control system, a comfortable sitting place, and a compartment for the computer at the back. The simulator is constructed using metal with plastic elements and is supplemented with ergonomic onlays made of integral polyurethane foam, ensuring both durability and comfort.
To realize this design, the team first analyzed plastic analogues and created sketches to determine the shaping lines and form of the product. Using Autodesk 3ds Max, they then modeled the simulator and visualized it using V-Ray. Additionally, a scaled model was created to further refine the design.
The Forklift Simulator measures 900mm in width, 1700mm in depth, and 1875mm in height, providing ample space for trainees to practice their skills. It is operated by lifting the folding screen, sitting in the designated place, and then lowering the screen to begin operating the simulator as if operating a real forklift.
The project, led by designer Anna Kholomkina, started in September 2014 in Moscow and was completed in December 2014. The Forklift Simulator was exhibited at the North Cargo Terminal Complex, Sheremetyevo International Airport, in January 2015.
This innovative design was the recipient of the Iron A' Design Award in the A' Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design category in 2016. The award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Forklift Simulator stood out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world through effective training and skill development.
