Gaenyeomsuda: Redefining Math Education with Joy and Accessibility

Revolutionizing Math Education through Gaenyeomsuda

Gaenyeomsuda, a groundbreaking project by the Miraen Design Team, aims to transform the way students perceive and engage with math education. Inspired by the unique language and culture of today's teens, Gaenyeomsuda combines art, design, and innovation to create a math textbook that is both accessible and enjoyable.

Mathematics has long been considered a challenging and daunting subject for many students. The mere mention of math often evokes feelings of anxiety and frustration. Gaenyeomsuda seeks to change this narrative by infusing joy and creativity into the learning process.

The inspiration behind Gaenyeomsuda stems from the vibrant culture of teenagers, who have their own language and way of communicating. The Miraen Design Team recognized the power of customization and abbreviation in the teen's world, where personal diaries are filled with thoughts and collections of their interests. Drawing from this inspiration, Gaenyeomsuda incorporates speech balloons as a motif throughout the textbook.

One of the unique properties of Gaenyeomsuda is its emphasis on easy access for students. The brand name itself, Gaenyeomsuda, is an abbreviation derived from the phrase "concept is everything in math." This abbreviation not only captures the essence of the brand but also reflects its identity. By integrating abbreviation and customization, which are representative of teen culture, into the logo design, Gaenyeomsuda intuitively conveys the brand's concept: that math can be studied with joy, akin to having a friendly chat.

The realization of Gaenyeomsuda involved meticulous attention to detail. The speech balloon design, with its hand-drawn aesthetic, and the captivating illustrations were intentionally created to engage students. The cover, reminiscent of textbooks scribbled on during moments of fatigue, evokes a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. By evoking happy memories, Gaenyeomsuda aims to make the process of studying math more approachable and enjoyable.

Technical specifications for Gaenyeomsuda include a size of 210mm x 260mm. The entire page is matte laminated, while the logo and pictures are coated with epoxy, adding a touch of sophistication and durability to the design.

Gaenyeomsuda extends beyond the confines of a textbook. The brand's concept is seamlessly integrated into various applications, including daily appliances and stationery. By incorporating math into everyday life, Gaenyeomsuda aims to create a friendly and natural environment for learning. As the brand becomes more familiarized, math will no longer be viewed with disdain, but rather as an integral part of daily life.

The Gaenyeomsuda project spanned from August 2022 to November 2022, with the textbook going on sale in December 2022. Extensive research was conducted to understand the challenges students face when approaching math. The goal was to provide students with an easy and enjoyable way to begin their math journey, aligning with Aristotle's famous saying, "well begun is half done."

Overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges was an integral part of the Gaenyeomsuda design process. Studying, especially math, is often perceived as difficult. While various solutions have been explored, none have proven entirely satisfactory. Foil printing, specifically black foil, was considered to pique user interest. However, the risk of errors during mass production led to the use of transparent epoxy for both the logo and pictures, effectively resolving the issue.

Gaenyeomsuda has received widespread recognition for its innovative approach to math education. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design category in 2023. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Gaenyeomsuda is not just a math textbook; it is a testament to the power of design, innovation, and creativity in transforming education. By infusing joy, accessibility, and a touch of teen culture into math learning, Gaenyeomsuda paves the way for a new era of engaging and effective education.
