Nimble: Redefining the Glue Gun

A Sustainable and Ergonomic Design by Roberto Maurizio Paura

Can a simple glue gun be transformed into a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing tool? Italian designer Roberto Maurizio Paura proves that it can be done with his innovative design, Nimble.

Nimble is a redesign of a medium-low priced heat gun that had previously suffered from ergonomic and mechanical issues. Paura's goal was to optimize the design for sustainability without changing the internal components. The result is a glue gun that stands out for its reduction in materials and improved aesthetics.

The sustainable design of Nimble focuses on the details. The trigger is designed to accommodate all fingers of the hand, becoming a complementary element of the handle. The glue spot has become a visible element that allows users to easily monitor the progress of the stick. By making internal changes, Paura was able to address the mechanical issues, such as the defect of the anchor of the spring.

The realization of Nimble involved a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The initial sketches were made on blocks of extruded polystyrene, which were then analyzed using parametric software to create a file suitable for CNC milling. The final model was made of MDF and PVC foam and painted. For industrial production, the bodies of the heat gun are intended to be made of PA6 through injection molding.

Measuring at 130mm in width, 30mm in depth, and 175mm in height, Nimble is compact and easy to handle. Its design allows for a simplified operation, with a stand that raises the heat gun from the ground, facilitating gripping and cooling down any drops of glue. The power cable sticks out from the body without tension, and the stand can be turned to attach Nimble to a hook. The shape of the trigger ensures better control when pushing glue sticks.

The Nimble project started in June 2012 in Rome and was completed in September 2012. It was exhibited in the ISIA ROMA - 40's Exhibition in March 2014. The design process involved extensive research, including the creation of mockups and engineering the final choice using parametric software. The reduction of plastics by 33% compared to the original model was analyzed using Ecolizer 2.0.

Nimble has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Hardware, Power and Hand Tools Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.

Roberto Maurizio Paura's Nimble is a testament to the power of sustainable design. By reimagining a simple tool like the glue gun, Paura has created a product that is not only functional but also environmentally friendly and visually appealing.
