A Cinematic Experience Inspired by Stars

The inspiration for this design came from the idea of visualizing the 3D construction of a star. Unlike evenly distributed squares, stars comprise of uneven lines and angles. The designers imagined turning a star into pod vessels and then shrinking or elongating each angle. Through 3D actualization, the walls of Starz Cinema bestow a various 'star' feeling. The designers have simulated the texture of stars with silver-colored metals, while keeping the background dark to enhance the contrast and brightness of the stars.

What sets Starz Cinema apart is the way the concept of stars is embodied throughout the perimeter of the cinema. As visitors arrive at the main lobby, they will notice scattered pieces of star patterns disguised among the background. These uncustomary forms of star patterns trigger people's imagination and create a sense of wonder. The stones and tiles used in the design contour the impression of a star, without actualizing the definite form of it.

The design team, led by Ajax Law Ling Kit and Virginia Lung Wai Ki, faced several challenges in bringing this design to life. One of the main challenges was creating an auditorium that prolonged the shape of a star. The walls of the auditorium are made up of layers and layers of 3D panels, which reflect the pattern of a star through the play of light and shadows. The designers showcased their inventiveness by hiding the star message, without actually showing the normal star pattern. Various embodiments carry the hidden star message throughout the perimeter of Starz Cinema.

Located in Wuhan, China, Starz Cinema is a testament to the creativity and innovation of Ajax Law and his design team. The design project took a considerable amount of time and effort to complete, resulting in a truly unique and visually stunning cinema experience.
