H20il: A Captivating Bench and Occasional Table

A Unique Design by Jeffrey A Day

Very simply, Jeffrey A Day wanted to capture the look and feel of oil floating on water. Inspired by the frequent encounters with oil on water in various settings, from food preparation to industrial machinery, Day aimed to highlight this phenomenon by altering proportions, materials, and locations.

H20il is a laminated hardwood bench and occasional table that relies on the precision of a CNC router to carefully bring the design to life. By using two different species of wood, the design creates the illusion of oil interacting with water. The less dense wood, representing oil, always appears to float on top. The custom legs of the bench are cast in a small foundry using green sand. Each aluminum leg weighs 1.8 kilograms and features three countersink mounting points. The legs are available in brushed, hammered, and raw finishes, with the option to keep the flashing attached.

The surface of the design is straightforward, with laminated hardwood showcasing the color differentiation between the two wood species. The custom legs, however, required meticulous attention to detail to ensure the design intent was realized. Throughout the manufacturing process, the pattern maker worked to maintain the desired "feel" of the legs, adapting the methodology to achieve consistent casting results.

With dimensions of 1524mm in width, 406mm in depth, and 406mm in height, H20il is a versatile piece of furniture that can be used as a bench or coffee table in any dwelling or office space.

The H20il project began in February 2015 in Seattle, WA, and was completed in July 2015 in the same location. Day's research for this design involved both observational studies of oil and liquid interactions and consultations with experts in foundry work and pattern making.

One of the creative challenges faced during the design process was creating a natural-looking pattern that accurately captured the interaction between oil and water. However, through careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, Day successfully achieved this organic quality in the final design.

H20il is a fresh take on a common everyday occurrence, transforming the properties of water and oil into a static piece of furniture. With its unique design and custom cast legs, this bench and occasional table truly stand out. The legs are available in brushed, hammered, and raw finishes, each offering a distinct aesthetic. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016, recognizing its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness.
