The Stasis Table: A Concrete Masterpiece

Exploring the Nature of Concrete through Design

In an era dominated by technological advancements, the love for materials can sometimes be overshadowed. However, designer Mike Pond seeks to restore the passion for material with his innovative creation, The Stasis Table. This coffee table pushes the boundaries of concrete, showcasing its unique properties and creating a harmonious balance between form and function.

The Stasis Table stands out from other designs due to its implementation of poly fiber reinforcing, which allows the concrete to be pushed to its limits. Ranging from 1cm to 7cm in thickness, the strength of the table comes from the shape deflection in its concave parabolic curves. Every piece of the table is essential, as the balance of the curves is achieved only when the glass top is in place, working with gravity to maintain perfect equilibrium.

Concrete, aluminum, and glass are the primary materials used in the creation of The Stasis Table. The concrete is reinforced with fiberglass and tension rods, while the "broken" part of the concrete serves to highlight the uniqueness of each piece, making it impossible to replicate through technological means. The interdependence of all the elements ensures that any alteration to one component will affect the position of the others.

With dimensions of approximately 40cm in height, 182cm in width, and 80cm in depth, The Stasis Table is a striking addition to any living space. Its symmetrical design creates an ever-changing visual experience, with perspectives altering depending on the viewer's vantage point.

The creation of The Stasis Table was not without its challenges. The most significant hurdle was to develop a form that allowed for pouring the concrete from any direction. Manipulating a liquid material in three dimensions required careful planning and technical expertise.

Concrete has been used for thousands of years, but it is only in recent times that technology has provided the tools necessary to create objects like The Stasis Table. Custom mixing plasticizer, free-form rubber molds, and poly fibers were some of the innovative methods employed during the design process.

The Stasis Table is a testament to the delicate balance between the pure expression of concrete's inherent nature and the technological innovation required to bring it to life. It serves as a reminder that craftsmanship and technological advancements can coexist harmoniously, creating truly unique and authentic designs.

Winner of the Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2016, The Stasis Table has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Experience the beauty and innovation of The Stasis Table, where concrete transcends its traditional boundaries and becomes a work of art.
