Legacy Meets Contemporary in the Haleiwa Chair

Melissa Mae Tan's Award-Winning Design Balances Tradition and Modernity

The Haleiwa chair, designed by Melissa Mae Tan, is a testament to the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Inspired by the concept of balance, this piece combines the strength of a metal frame with the fluidity of handwoven rattan, a material deeply rooted in the indigenous Philippine furniture tradition.

The chair's unique properties lie in its seamless merging of contrasting elements. Sweeping curves meet striking lines, creating a visual statement that is both graceful and robust. The use of rattan, a sustainable and durable material, is a nod to the rich history of the artisans who have crafted pieces from it. Paired with a solid metal frame, the chair breaks away from tradition just enough to create a modern and innovative aesthetic.

The Haleiwa chair was conceptualized in August 2019 and completed in October of the same year in Manila, Philippines. The design process involved a meticulous study of balance and stability, given the chair's unconventional form. The placement of supports and dimensions of elements were carefully considered and tested throughout the prototyping period.

One of the key challenges faced during the design process was ensuring the chair's stability. The width of the legs connecting the base to the seat posed a significant challenge. The solution was a triangular base design that balanced both structural and aesthetic considerations. Furthermore, the internal supports had to be strategically located to maximize stability while remaining as inconspicuous as possible, given the chair's exposed skeletal composition.

The Haleiwa chair is as functional as it is beautiful. It is wide enough for the user to sit comfortably in any position, and cushions are provided for additional ease and comfort without detracting from the visual impact. Whether paired or used as a statement piece, the chair's versatile design allows it to adapt to different styles.

This innovative design did not go unnoticed. The Haleiwa chair was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2020, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award recognizes designs that showcase a remarkable level of excellence and evoke positive feelings of amazement and wonder.
