Light Scars: A Unique Blend of Art and Function

Introducing Ruth Bachrach's Innovative Sheers

Inspired by personal narratives and the interplay of light and space

Ruth Bachrach, a visionary designer, has created a remarkable design called Light Scars. These sheers are not only visually stunning but also serve as a canvas for personal expression. With a unique application of laser cutting technique and carefully selected fabrics, Ruth has crafted a design that combines art, technology, and functionality.

Light Scars is the result of Ruth's personal journey and her desire to celebrate the individual stories of end-consumers. As someone who suffers from ME/Long Covid and spends most of her time bedridden, Ruth found solace in observing her garden through the windows. This inspired her to create a design that captures the ever-changing play of light as the sun moves across the sky.

Drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as Moorish architecture, Vermeer's "Milk Maid," the Koran, and Shakespeare, Ruth has infused Light Scars with a sense of timelessness and poetic beauty. The sheers project moving text through the space, creating a mesmerizing interplay between words, light, and the dweller.

What sets Light Scars apart is Ruth's innovative approach to design. She has developed her own font and perfected the laser cutting technique to ensure that the text is clear yet maintains the strength of the sheers. This technique is now being made easily accessible to end-consumers through a Product-on-Demand platform, allowing them to personalize their space with their chosen texts.

Light Scars is available in English, Arabic, Japanese, and Hebrew fonts, catering to a wide range of cultural and linguistic preferences. The sheers are made from polyester fabric, ensuring durability and easy maintenance. The unique combination of design, technology, and materials makes Light Scars a truly exceptional creation.

Ruth's design not only transforms interiors but also commemorates the past. In a poignant installation-performance, Light Scars paid tribute to the previous dwellers of Ruth's apartment in Amsterdam, a Jewish family who tragically lost their lives during World War II. This project serves as a reminder of the power of design to honor and remember.

Recognizing the brilliance of Ruth's design, Light Scars was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2022. This accolade celebrates the fusion of practicality, innovation, and professional craftsmanship that Light Scars embodies. It is a testament to Ruth's dedication to creating designs that enrich lives and contribute to a better world.

Light Scars is not just a design; it is a testament to the power of art, technology, and personal narratives. Ruth Bachrach's innovative sheers transcend boundaries, merging indoors and outdoors, and inviting dwellers to become active participants in their own space. With Light Scars, words become a prophecy, and light becomes a medium for self-expression.
