TRIO BENCH: A Multifunctional Bench Designed by Yazan Hijazin

Combining Seating and Relaxation in Limited Spaces

TRIO Bench is a unique and innovative upholstered bench that can seat four people. However, with a few simple manual adjustments, it can be transformed into a recliner or chez lounge with two additional body positions. Made of walnut wood and upholstered fabric and leather, the bench also features a foldable headrest option, maximizing space utilization.

The design process for TRIO Bench involved hand-sketching, CAD-drawing, and creating a mock-up before final production. The bench was meticulously handcrafted using walnut wood and upholstered with two types of fabrics. The entire production process took approximately two months.

With dimensions of 2.6 x 0.80 x 0.43 meters, TRIO Bench features an upholstered base with two triangular pieces that can be repositioned to offer fully reclined seating with two different body postures. The upholstered structure also contains hidden wooden nerves to maintain the fabric's straight lines.

TRIO Bench offers a unique user interaction. By manually adjusting the two triangular upholstered pieces, one hidden under the bench and the other replacing a section of the original structure, and unrolling the headrest, the bench transforms into a comfortable recliner or chez lounge. This surprising transformation adds an element of delight for every user.

The design and production of TRIO Bench took place in Amman, Jordan, over a period of two and a half months. The design was inspired by the hexagon shape, which is commonly found in Islamic geometry. The bench's multi-functionality is achieved through the manual adjustment of two triangles, creating a versatile seating experience.

One of the main challenges faced during the production of TRIO Bench was achieving straight lines and edges in the upholstery. The team worked with local craftsmen in Amman to find a balance between comfort and aesthetics, using layers of dunlop and a wooden structure to maintain the desired aesthetic while ensuring comfort.

Trio Bench is a geometrical bench made of walnut wood, fabric, and leather. It seats up to four people and offers two additional full-body reclining positions when the upholstered pieces are adjusted and the headrest is unfolded. Designed for a private residence with limited space, it combines the functionality of a sofa with the luxurious experience of a chez lounge. The sleek design adds a touch of elegance to any space.

TRIO Bench was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. TRIO Bench showcases excellence in both technical characteristics and aesthetic appeal, evoking positive emotions and wonder.
