Christian Kim's "Drilling" is a three-legged stool, composed of three identical aluminium parts. The idea behind the design was to make multiple use of identical parts to create an economical production process and formal simplicity. The result is a piece of furniture that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and cost-effective.
The three parts of the stool are connected alongside their respective outward-facing surfaces. This design choice not only contributes to the stool's unique appearance but also enhances its stability and rigidity. By doubling the material along the legs, "Drilling" gains its robustness, ensuring it can withstand regular use.
One of the standout features of "Drilling" is the seat, which is formed by joining the three parts. It has a recess at its center, which can be used as a handle for carrying the stool. This design feature enhances the stool's portability, making it a versatile piece of furniture that can be easily moved and used in various settings.
The stool's production process involves cutting the three parts from 4mm aluminium, bending, sandblasting, and anodizing or powder coating. The final product measures 360mmx360mmx480mm, making it a compact yet comfortable seating solution.
"Drilling" was created in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, between March and December 2011. It was later exhibited at the Designersfair during the IMM Cologne in January 2012. The stool's innovative design and functionality have earned it the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2013. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
