Consentable MT: A Multi-Purpose Dining Table for Modern Living

Redesigning the Traditional Dining Table with Takusei Kajitani

Inspired by the flexibility of Japanese culture, designer Takusei Kajitani introduces Consentable MT, a dining table that seamlessly combines functionality and style. With its innovative design and versatile features, this table revolutionizes the way we dine and work, making it a perfect addition to modern homes.

Consentable MT draws inspiration from the traditional Japanese concept of Washitsu, where a room serves multiple purposes depending on the time and occasion. Kajitani's vision was to create a dining table that could adapt to the needs of each family member, allowing them to store and retrieve work tools, including devices, in six drawers conveniently located on the table.

What sets Consentable MT apart is its multi-purpose functionality. The table features six drawers with narrow gaps for wirings, allowing not only meal-related items but also laptops and other devices to be stored neatly. This means that when it's time to work, users can easily access their laptops from the drawers, and when it's time to eat, they can simply put them away, creating a seamless transition between work and family time. This unique feature transforms Consentable MT into a family hangout, providing both a dining and working space.

Crafted by Japanese furniture craftsmen at Youbi Co., Consentable MT is made using traditional Japanese methods without the use of any nails. This not only ensures the table's durability but also pays homage to Japan's rich woodworking heritage.

With its dimensions of 1600mm width, 900mm depth, and 730mm height, Consentable MT is designed to fit seamlessly into any modern living space. Its sleek and minimalist design, combined with the warmth of cypress wood, creates an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere.

Consentable MT's interaction with users is seamless and intuitive. The table features drawers specifically designed to store OA taps, allowing for easy access to power sources while keeping the tabletop clutter-free. Additionally, the grooves on the legs hide the cords of the connected devices, ensuring a clean and organized workspace. The top plate even includes a small opening for setting a vase of flowers, allowing users to decorate the table and enjoy the beauty of seasonal blooms.

The development of Consentable MT began in November 2014 in Tokyo, and it was first exhibited at the IFFT Tokyo Interior Lifestyle in November 2015. After years of refinement and commercialization efforts, this innovative dining table became available to the public in 2022.

Consentable MT not only showcases the ingenuity of its designer, Takusei Kajitani, but also addresses important issues surrounding the use of cypress wood in modern times. By highlighting the decreasing usage of cypress and its impact on traditional Japanese techniques, Kajitani sheds light on the need to preserve and appreciate these cultural treasures.

Recognized for its outstanding design and creative ingenuity, Consentable MT was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2023. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that embody resourcefulness, technical excellence, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

With Consentable MT, Takusei Kajitani has reimagined the traditional dining table, creating a versatile and functional piece of furniture that seamlessly integrates into modern lifestyles. Its innovative design, combined with its commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship, makes Consentable MT a true masterpiece of art, architecture, and design.
