Table Herringbone: A Timeless and Eco-Friendly Dining Table

Alexandre Caldas' Innovative Design

Inspired by the structure of leaves and the desire to eliminate what is superfluous, the Table Herringbone by Alexandre Caldas is a stunning example of simplicity and sophistication in design. This eco-friendly dining table showcases the beauty of certified solid wood and recycled glass, while utilizing traditional woodworking techniques.

The Table Herringbone, designed by Alexandre Caldas, takes its inspiration from the structure of leaves and the desire to reduce the use of natural resources. The unique herringbone pattern of the table's structure eliminates what is unnecessary, leaving only the beautiful silhouette and internal structure exposed. This design approach not only creates a visually striking piece but also reduces the environmental impact of the table's construction.

One of the standout features of the Table Herringbone is its use of certified solid wood. By utilizing this sustainable material and minimizing the use of glue, the table embodies eco-conscious design principles. Additionally, the tabletop incorporates recycled glass, one of the world's most recycled resources, further enhancing its environmental credentials.

The construction of the Table Herringbone is a testament to the craftsmanship and expertise of master woodworkers. Traditional woodworking techniques are employed to create a table that is not only visually appealing but also structurally sound. The simplicity of the design allows the table to be appreciated in its purest form, without the need for complex interaction mechanisms.

Measuring 2500 x 1000 x 750, the Table Herringbone is a versatile dining table that can accommodate gatherings of various sizes. Its natural oil finish enhances the beauty of the American solid wood, adding a touch of warmth to any space.

The design process for the Table Herringbone began in January 2021 in Lisbon, with initial sketches on paper. The project then progressed to the 3D creation phase for visualization before the production of a prototype in pine wood. The final piece, crafted from American Walnut, was completed in September 2022.

Alexandre Caldas faced several challenges during the design process, particularly in the fixation of the stringers that join the two parts of the table. This required a custom solution, as there was nothing available on the market that could meet the specific requirements of the design. Additionally, the sculpting of the two large table tops was done by hand to achieve their final shape.

The Table Herringbone has garnered recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2023. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its timeless design, eco-friendly materials, and masterful craftsmanship, the Table Herringbone by Alexandre Caldas is a true masterpiece that combines art, innovation, and sustainability.
