The inspiration for Ubon Murouj came from the vibrant Thai culture, with hints of brass used to portray the importance of gold in Thai ornamentation. The walls are cladded with charred wood, giving them a textured black appearance that is complemented by minimal pendant and wall-mounted light fixtures. The mosaic concrete flooring adds a touch of flexibility to the space, allowing for a broader color palette spectrum.
One of the standout features of Ubon Murouj is its location. Overlooking a green field, a manmade lake, and a horse racing track, the bistro offers a stunning exterior view. The design approach was kept minimal to ensure that the view remains the focal point. As the second branch of the same bistro, the designers aimed to create an atmosphere that is relatable to the existing concept without being repetitive.
The realization of the design involved some innovative techniques. A monolithic black mirrored wall in the dining area creates a subtle reflection of the surrounding environment while concealing the mechanical services and ducting. To maintain the six-meter height in the space, jet nozzle diffusers were embedded within the black mirrored wall, creating a functional and visually appealing detail. Acoustic boards were also added to the existing ceiling structure to reduce echo and provide a balanced ambiance.
Throughout the design process, the input of the chefs, waiters, and baristas was crucial in creating the ideal circulation flow for the space. Their firsthand experience and feedback helped shape the layout to optimize functionality.
The Ubon Murouj project started in October 2014 in Kuwait and was completed in June 2015. Before settling on the burnt wood cladding, the designers conducted experiments with different levels of burning to achieve the desired aesthetic. The final decision was made to use black linear wood panels.
Ubon Murouj has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2016 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, evoking positive emotions and a sense of wonder.
Ubon Murouj is a testament to the successful fusion of Thai culture and minimalism. With its unique design elements and stunning location, it offers a dining experience that is both visually captivating and memorable.
