Rice Home: A Playful Honeycomb Fast Food Restaurant in Guangzhou

Creating a Unique Dining Experience with Modern Design

Located in Guangzhou City, China, Rice Home is a newly launched premium casual dining brand that originated from Hong Kong. With a focus on superior rice quality, attentive service, and a clean dining environment, Rice Home aims to provide a unique and contemporary dining experience for young and trendy customers. To achieve this, the interior design of Rice Home incorporates a playful honeycomb theme, blending modern and innovative food made with rice with a diverse menu to meet the needs of its customers.

The design team behind Rice Home, AS Design Four Lau and Sam Sum, wanted to create a space that not only showcased the brand's charm but also provided a visually impactful and immersive dining experience. The use of irregular hexagons throughout the restaurant gives customers a sense of dynamism and enhances spatial layering. At the shop front, 3-dimensional black hexagons surrounded by contrasting colors create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The interior walls of Rice Home are adorned with light-colored hexagons against a black background, creating a sense of infinite extension and breaking away from the traditional restaurant aesthetic. The ceiling features 3-dimensional hexagons that connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, injecting a sense of tension and depth into the small dining area. Bright yellow accents and lighting effects further enhance the 3-dimensional experience while cleverly concealing the air conditioning units.

One of the standout features of Rice Home is the bowl-shaped sculptures on the curved wall, which create a visual sense of food aroma and arouse appetite. The yellow spheres symbolize food elements and connect to the TVs used to promote new food products. High-tech displays demonstrate the food menus, adding a touch of modernity and innovation to the dining experience.

AS Design Four Lau and Sam Sum faced the challenge of completing the design concept within a tight timeframe. They wanted to create a design language that would resonate with young people, using the symbols of "Hexagon & Bright Yellow" to evoke thoughts of a beehive in nature. By incorporating this natural structure throughout the restaurant, they were able to create a dynamic "Home/Living space" that reflects the brand's youthful and energetic image.

The design of Rice Home was completed in April 2013 in Hong Kong. It has since garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2015. This award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, and make the world a better place.

Rice Home is a testament to the power of design in creating a unique and memorable dining experience. With its playful honeycomb theme, modern aesthetics, and innovative use of space, Rice Home sets itself apart as a fast food restaurant that not only satisfies hunger but also stimulates the senses.
