Spyker: A Trivet Reimagined

Revolutionizing Kitchenware with a Blend of Vintage Inspiration and Modern Design

Introducing Spyker, a trivet designed by Prompong Hakk that has redefined the boundaries of kitchenware. Inspired by vintage airplane propellers, this award-winning design combines practicality with aesthetic appeal, offering a unique addition to both modern and traditional homes.

The Spyker trivet is not just a functional kitchen accessory, but a work of art. Its unique properties lie in its ability to transform from a sleek, compact form to a fully functional trivet. The design features a fingertip duct, allowing users to quickly open the trivet, which locks securely into place. When not in use, its compact design allows for easy storage, making it a versatile addition to any kitchen.

The design process of Spyker was a journey of innovation and creativity. The trivet is made from reinforced Nylon, covered with food-grade Silicone for instant heat absorption and protective anti-slipping on table tops. The central highlight, made from Stainless Steel with a spun brushed finish, adds a touch of class to the overall design. The Spyker trivet measures 22cm in length and 3cm in width, accommodating pots of various sizes.

The design of Spyker began in early 2015 in a Bangkok studio and went into production in September of the same year in Hong Kong. The design team, consisting of Jonathan Lo, Prompong Hakk, and Surakead Hemwimon, faced the challenge of creating a trivet that could compete with existing products in the market. The team's research led them to focus on compactness and portability, aspects that were lacking in the current trivet market.

The team overcame creative and technical challenges, including the integration of a small mechanical locking feature and ensuring the trivet's usability. Observations showed that trivets were often used for purposes other than serving, such as laptop stands or vase coasters. The team aimed to create a design that would appeal to non-traditional users and inspire other creative uses.

Spyker's innovative design did not go unnoticed. In 2016, it was awarded the Platinum A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design Award. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing. Spyker's design has indeed pushed the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, offering a unique and practical solution to a common household need.
